Episode Summary
Phoenix felt lost in his UX career. He didn’t have a clarity problem, he had a UX career identity problem.
After years of bouncing between roles in development, systems analysis, and UX, he had racked up experience in just about everything, except positioning himself. Like so many mid-to-senior professionals, Phoenix had become the person who could do anything, which made it nearly impossible to confidently say what he wanted to do next.
Before joining Career Strategy Lab, Phoenix was entertaining roles that looked good on paper but would have left him drained in reality. He even interviewed for jobs he admits would’ve made him miserable, just to keep the job search moving. It wasn’t until he went through our first sprint, focused on the “design” of your career, that things started to shift.
In this episode, Phoenix shares what changed when he finally gave himself permission to stop trying to fit into the UX roles he thought he should want and started designing a UX career around the skills and impact he actually enjoyed. He walks us through how the Compass Statement exercise forced him to see himself through the eyes of colleagues and collaborators, and how their feedback helped him reclaim the title of systems designer with pride and confidence.
We talk about what it means to stop defaulting to “what’s available” and instead move with intention, especially when you’re mid-career and managing years (or decades) of overlapping skills, job titles, and self-doubt. This episode is a real-time look at someone in the middle of that transformation, not just the polished before-and-after.
If you feel lost in UX or that your path in UX has felt nonlinear, unclear, or like a collection of mismatched roles and projects, this episode will help you zoom out and reconnect the dots. You don’t have to niche down to something you’ll hate. You just need a strategy that starts with who you are and where you want to go next.
Hear how Phoenix reclaimed his UX identity and started showing up like the systems-driven leader he already was.
